Over the past 15 years, Pierre Bertrand has built a multifaceted career that makes him one of the most active and inventive French jazz creators.  He is mainly looked upon as a saxophone and flute player but he has become very famous for his work as a composer and leader of great bands. With regard to big bands, Bertrand’s music is very often played by the leading French band in this area, the Paris Jazz band, which he founded in 1998 together with the trumpet player, Nicolas Folmer. This orchestra is chosen for sophisticated but not inaccessible music, which is extremely personal and innovative and easily adapted to different kinds of projects due to the huge variety of influences and styles used. It is easily heard in Spanish or South American music, in the splendid album, Mediterranean, edited in 2002, and in urban funk and rock grooves in Paris 24h, produced in 2004. The more recent album, Sources, edited in 2012, focuses on Africa, its music and rhythmic culture.

These are Pierre Bertrand’s creations that are the closest to what the Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos will present in the concert dedicated to this 41-year old composer trained in the Conservatories of Nice - with first prizes in classical saxophone and chamber music – and Paris – with first prizes in harmony and counterpoint and the Higher Certificate in Jazz. These and others that he performs with the Nice Jazz Orchestra, founded in 2008 and directed by himself.

However, Bertrand has many more works than those contained in the repertoire of these big bands. Sound tracks are an important part of his catalogue, including several films for French public television and feature films such as La grande vie (2009) by Emmanuel Salinger. He was the author of big band arrangements of the latest background album of the French singer and author, Claude Nougaro and others for his concerts at the Palais des Congrès. He also signed orchestral arrangements for Aznavour, Lio, Pascal Obispo, Murray Head, Holliday On Ice, Nikos Aliagas, Demi Evans, Juan Carmona, Enrico Macias, the musical Play Piaf, among others.

But even when one focuses on arrangements outside the normal world of jazz, Pierre Bertrand’s creations include a wide variety of styles:  he composed the choreographic Flamenco opera, Madre, for the dancer, Sharon Sultan, and many institutions commission a wide variety of formations from him.

Dedication to the great ensembles does not leave much room for listening to Pierre Bertrand himself, as a soloist and leader. This was finally possible in 2009 with the album, Caja Negra, which was the first record produced by a fully-fledged, experienced artist with an innovative and personal project. The group of musicians, who combine the sensitivities of jazz and Flamenco, will get together once again in 2013 for a second record.

This is the music of a true Mediterranean man, born in the coastal town of Cagnes-sur-Mer, half-way between Cannes and Nice, in constant demand by different languages and cultures.
